moments...

Graham Ball and Tim SmithEach film Waking Dream makes is intended to develop our skills in different areas. The intention on moments... was to make a more character driven film than Overtime and incorporate some simple effects and physical action. At the time of writing, there was a high profile robbery in Nottingham and that was used as the basis for the story.

The film was shot on a bank holiday Sunday near the centre of Mansfield, which proved to be a bad decision. Between the thumping club music, the drunken people stumbling by and the boy racers doing laps of the town, the exterior scenes were difficult to shoot. After the first attempts at shooting on the corner failed, we moved further away from the centre and used a lamppost to give the impression the characters are stood in the same place. Once the exterior shots were complete we moved into ground Zero and the rest of the shoot went smoothly, apart from one concerned citizen who thought we were actually being robbed.

Filmonik June 2007

moments... was also the first Waking Dream film to go through a grading process. The exterior scenes were colour corrected to match each other and given a warm orange glow to enhance the street lights. moments... screened at Filmonik in June 2007 and was received well by the Manchester crowd. It gave us the confidence to try more elaborate films and the robbery is referenced in Gabriel Small, giving a clue to the true ending of moments...
